The George F. Hixson Fellowship was created in 1983 by the Kiwanis International Foundation Board of Trustees. It is named in honor of the first Kiwanis International President, who served from 1916 to 1918.

First time George F. Hixson Fellowship members receive two numbered medallions bearing the likeness of Hixson. Both hang from a blue-and white-ribbon.  One is encased in a walnut and velvet shadow box for display, and the other is worn at high visibility Kiwanis functions.  Also awarded is a lapel pin.

Then Kiwanis Treasurer, Steve Dickens, awarded two “Kiwanian of the Year” awards. Bob Young and Deborah Mellinger shared that honor. Bob and Deb met at Kiwanis, and is engaged to be married on May 21.

Kiwanian of the Year Award is given to one Kiwanian each year, at the annual holiday party. The Kiwanian of the Year is designed to honor Kiwanians who have made a significant contribution to the club within the year.  Kiwanis Club of Greater Parsippany has been honoring a volunteer since 1992.

Connie Keller said “Tonight we celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the Kiwanis Club of Greater Parsippany. It is because of every member of the past 25 years that we are still an active viable club. For every member that has volunteered, attended a fundraiser, chaired a function, was a direct or an officer … this night is for you.  Celebrate and enjoy all that you have accomplished over the years. You have shown me that way and I am proud to be part of this organization.”

In it’s 25-year history, Kiwanis Club of Greater Parsippany has awarded almost 40 “Hixson Awards.  Hixson are given to Kiwanians who have contributed to the betterment of the club. The Club is eligible to award a Hixson for each donation of $1,000 to the Kiwanis International Foundation.

Good-bye to the King of Burgers; Hello to the King of Coffee

PARSIPPANY — Parsippany Focus has learned the Burger King at 1429 Route 46, corner of Baldwin Road will be closing to make room for Starbucks. Soon you will be able to order your Iced Carmel Macchiato or Caffè Americano closer to home.

This will be the second Starbucks coming to Parsippany.  Parisppany Focus published news about the first Starbucks being built on Route 10, a 2,000 square foot cafe with a drive through (click here for article).

Burger King, home of the WHOPPER® sandwich, is known for fast food burgers, breakfast, lunch and dinner.

The company began in 1953 as Insta-Burger King, a Jacksonville, Florida-based restaurant chain. After Insta-Burger King ran into financial difficulties in 1954, its two Miami-based franchisees, David Edgerton and James McLamore, purchased the company and renamed it Burger King. Over the next half century, the company would change hands four times, with its third set of owners, a partnership of TPG Capital, Bain Capital, and Goldman Sachs Capital Partners, taking it public in 2002. In late 2010, 3G Capital of Brazil acquired a majority stake in BK in a deal valued at US$3.26 billion. The new owners promptly initiated a restructuring of the company to reverse its fortunes. 3G, along with partner Berkshire Hathaway, eventually merged the company with Canadian-based doughnut chain Tim Hortons under the auspices of a new Canadian-based parent company, Restaurant Brands International.

At the end of fiscal year 2013, Burger King reported it had over 13,000 outlets in 79 countries; of these, 66 percent are in the United States and 99 percent are privately owned and operated with its new owners moving to an entirely franchised model in 2013.

When the Parsippany location closes you will have to travel to 223 Route 10, East Hanover, 900 Bloomfield Avenue, West Caldwell or 171 West Main Street (Route 46) Denville, to get your WHOPPER®.

Nonprofit Offers Free Tuition for Parsippany Families in Need

PARSIPPANY — A child’s preschool experience can impact his or her academic career and success as an adult. Recognizing that, the nonprofit organization, Preschool Advantage, was formed more than 20 years ago and continues to offer preschool tuition to three- and four-year-old children whose families need assistance to provide them with that education.

“Studies have demonstrated that early childhood education profoundly affects a child’s life, including intellectual development, self-confidence, even future earning potential,” says Molly Dunn, Executive Director of the nonprofit Preschool Advantage. “It enables our children to grow up to be responsible and fulfilled adults.”

Preschool Advantage is currently accepting applications for the September, 2016 to June, 2017 school year for half-day tuition, 3 to 5 days a week, at one of 17 local quality partner preschools. To qualify, children must be 3 or 4 years old by October 1, 2016 and parents must demonstrate a financial need for assistance. The application deadline is February 28.

Families can download an application from the website, by clicking here, or contact the office by calling (973-5) 2-2501 for assistance.

Since 1995, Preschool Advantage has recognized the long-term impact that quality early childhood education has on children and the character of our community and has underwritten the cost for nearly 800 children.

Par Troy Wrestling Club hosted Annual Holiday Wrestling Tournament

PARSIPPANY — Par Troy Wrestling Club (PTWC) hosted its Annual Holiday Wrestling Tournament at the Parsippany PAL Building. Wrestling teams from eight different towns in three different states participated. PTWC placed third in the Kindergarten to sixth grade division on Saturday, January 2, and second in the Kindergarten-eighth grade division on Sunday, January 3.

PTWC serves the entire town of Parsippany. They serve as feeder programs for the Parsippany middle and high school teams, and many of their youth wrestlers compete statewide.  The club is open to all Parsippany youths (boys and girls), grades kindergarten through the eighth grade.  PTWC is totally self-funded community organization, and rely on contributions and fund-raising to support their youth wrestling program. The Annual Holiday Tournament is PTWC’s largest annual fund raising event.

Ms. June Madia, an active club board member, past club president, and 13-year club volunteer stated, “Wrestling is one of the oldest sports known to man. In fact, it is thought to be on the original list of athletic events practiced at the ancient Olympic Games more than 2700 years ago. Wrestling compliments all other competitive sports, and imparts self-discipline, perseverance, and respect to those who stick with it. More importantly, this sport keeps our kids on the straight and narrow, away from the undesirable temptation so many encounter today.  The monetary outlay for wrestling is quite low when you compare it to most other youth sports;  All you basically need are a pair of wrestling shoes and a headgear. Although wrestling may not be for every child, it’s certainly worth  trying at a young age.”

For additional information please visit the club’s website by clicking here.  If you are interested in receiving information for registering your child in the PTWC wrestling program, or would like to make a donation, please contact PTWC’s Club President Angela Wasilewski at angela.wasilewski@verizon.net or June Madia at jmadia@aol.com or call (973) 476-7624.  PTWC is a registered nonprofit 501C community organization, therefore all donations are tax deductible.
