34th Annual Tee Off for Education Golf Classic Fundraiser Was a Huge Success
PARSIPPANY — The Woman’s Club of Parsippany Troy Hills (WCPTH) held its 34th Annual Tee off for Education Golf Classic at the Knoll West Country Club on July 14.
The Golf Classic is the primary fundraiser for the club’s educational programs and scholarships. Last year the club awarded nine scholarships to graduating Parsippany area High School seniors and awarded a scholarship in the continuing education program for a woman from the Jersey Battered Women’s Services. The club also participated in several elementary and middle school educational programs.
Seventy-eight golfers, including Parsippany Councilman Michael dePierro enjoyed the day. Two golfers, Dean Gannett and Rich Gannon, won the putting green contest, each having a hole in one in the contest. Club President, Marilyn Marion thought this was a first for the Golf Classic. There were also 40 non-golfers, many from St. Ann’s Church and area Women’s Clubs, who supported the fundraiser.
While the golfers were out on the course, there were several bridge, dominos and pokingo games being played. After the golf and games were finished, everyone was able to consider bidding on the vast Tricky Tray selection which included Yankee tickets, baskets of cheer, theater tickets, Vera Bradley hand bags, signed Jets football, gift cards to local restaurants and much more.
Parsippany-Troy Hills Mayor James Barberio was able to join everyone for the buffet lunch.
The Woman’s Club of Parsippany Troy Hills wishes to thank all of the area businesses who donated money, prizes and more. Their continued support of this annual event helps to make it a success. Next year the 35th Annual Tee Off for Education Golf Classic will be held on Tuesday, July 12.

Filing deadline for Board of Education Candidates is July 27
PARSIPPANY — The president of the New Jersey School Boards Association is urging citizens with a sincere interest in the education of Parsippany’s children to consider serving on the school board. The filing deadline for candidacy is 4 p.m., Monday, July 27.
Interested citizens can find information about the responsibilities of school board membership, qualifications for office, nominating petitions, and candidacy timelines on the NJSBA website at www.njsba.org/candidacy.
“Local school boards have a direct impact on the education received by New Jersey’s schoolchildren,” said Donald Webster, Jr., NJSBA president. “The board of education sets the goals and policies that represent the community’s aspirations for its public schools. The board selects the district’s superintendent and acts on his or her personnel recommendations. It negotiates collective bargaining agreements with teachers and other employees. And it makes critical decisions affecting curriculum, budgeting and facilities.
“Local school board membership is an unpaid and challenging public service, but it is also a rewarding public service that has a direct impact on the lives of our children and the quality of life in our communities,” he continued.
For their names to be placed on the November 3, 2015 election ballot, citizens seeking school board office must file a nominating petition at the Office of the County Clerk by the 4 p.m., July 27 deadline. A nominating petition must be signed by at least 10 registered voters within the school district.
Three seats are up for grabs this year. Fran Orthwein, Judy Mayer, and Michael Pietrowicz’ terms expire at the end of the year.

Acme puts bid to take over Denville A&P
DENVILLE — Parsippany Focus received dozens of emails regarding the A & P Food Store, 123-125 West Main Street, Denville. Since this food market is so close to Rainbow Lakes and Mt. Tabor sections of Parsippany, residents were wondering what was happening to their local food store.
Our article on the Parsippany Pathmark did not make any mention of the Denville A & P. (click here to read article)
We apologize that we overlooked a major store that many residents shop at.
It was announced that Acme Supermarkets entered into an agreement to acquire 76 A&P stores, and Denville is part of that agreement.
Acme entered into an agreement to acquire stores in Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania under the A&P, Superfresh and Pathmark banners.
The offer is subject to customary legal and bankruptcy court approvals, following A&P’s Chapter 11 filing on July 19, 2015, including the potential for higher bids to be submitted and anti-trust approval. A&P has asked the court for an order requiring other bidders to submit their bids by September 11, 2015, with an expectation that court approval for the sale of the stores would be received byOctober 15, 2015.
ACME Markets, a wholly-owned subsidiary of AB Acquisition LLC (Albertsons Companies), operates 107 stores across Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland and New Jersey. Since it was acquired by Albertsons in 2013, ACME Markets has improved the customer experience and store performance across the division, deploying its operational playbook to drive sales growth. The transaction, if completed, would expand the ACME Markets footprint in a strategic and vibrant market and build upon A&P’s rich history of delivering quality products and services in the neighborhoods they serve.
RBC Capital Markets is serving as exclusive financial advisor in connection with this transaction. Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy LLP is serving as lead bankruptcy counsel. Schulte Roth & Zabel LLP is serving as outside legal counsel on antitrust matters. Greenberg Traurig, LLP is serving as outside legal counsel on real estate matters. Citigroup Global Markets Inc. and Bank of America Merrill Lynch provided committed financing in support of the acquisition.
About ACME Markets
ACME Markets Inc. began in 1891 when two friends, Samuel Robinson and Robert Crawford, opened a small neighborhood grocery store in South Philadelphia, emphasizing quality products, low prices, and friendly service. Today, Acme operates 107 stores, including Sav-On Pharmacies at select locations, in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware and Maryland, employing more than 11,000 associates. Blue-Chip Tenants from multiple industries drive improvements in office market
PARSIPPANY — Blue-chip tenants in varying industries are at the forefront of the steady improvement of New Jersey’s office market, according to Transwestern’s Second-Quarter 2015 Office Market report, despite the number of Fortune 500 companies headquartered in New Jersey dropping to 19. Transwestern is located at 300 Kimball Drive, Suite 1.
“The continued improvement of the New Jersey office market is reflective of the state’s diversification and balance,” said James Postell, Partner, City Leader at Transwestern. “While the number of Fortune 500 companies headquartered in the state has decreased from 21, several remain extremely active in the state in various locations and industries.”
With companies such as MetLife Inc., GlaxoSmithKline and New York Life Insurance Co. signing leases during the second quarter, nearly 400,000 square feet of office space was absorbed, marking the fifth quarter of positive net absorption in the past six quarters. Year-over-year, 1.7 million square feet of positive absorption was recorded – the fourth straight quarter where year-over-year absorption exceeded 1 million square feet.
“Transit-oriented locales such as Jersey City and Woodbridge/MetroPark are performing well, “said Matthew Dolly, Transwestern’s research director for New Jersey. “Suburban regions such as Parsippany, Somerset/Interstate 78 East and the often-maligned Route 287 South are competing by investing in capital improvements and improving mass transit options. Conversely, the Bergen North submarket was hit hard by move-outs, and the vacancy rate has doubled from 8.0 percent to 16.0 percent during the past 18 months.”
More than 1.2 million square feet of inventory was added during the past 12 months, with an additional 2 million square feet under construction.
Asking rents declined slightly to $24.72 for the quarter, compared to $24.91 for the previous quarter, a reflection of the quality space that has been taken off the market.
Insurance companies are increasing their market presence.
Life science companies, especially small and mid-sized firms, are active in the market.
Corporate consolidations and move-outs are still anticipated, especially in the pharmaceutical sector, which has experienced a great deal of change as the market has evolved.
