PARSIPPANY — Mount Tabor residents continued one of the community’s most cherished traditions with the 2026 Children’s Day celebration, held Thursday, August 6, through Sunday, August 9.

This year’s circus-inspired theme, “Big Top Tabor,” was reflected throughout the historic neighborhood with colorful floats, costumes, decorated homes, bicycles and wagons.
Lincoln Estes was selected as the 2026 Children’s Day King, while Laurily Merzatta was chosen as Queen. Anina Schumann served as the celebration’s grand marshal.
The main Children’s Day Parade stepped off on Saturday, August 8, with children, families and community organizations traveling through Mount Tabor’s narrow streets. The Denville String Band provided music during the afternoon parade.

A second parade was held Saturday evening, followed by a concert featuring The Christina Alessi Band and a fireworks display. The weekend also included activities, athletic competitions and other programs centered around Mount Tabor’s children.

The Mount Tabor Historical Society opened the Richardson History House during the weekend, giving visitors an opportunity to learn more about the neighborhood’s distinctive Victorian architecture and history.

Children’s Day traces its origins to Mount Tabor’s early Sunday school activities. An 1885 program described a procession of students and a band traveling through the community before gathering at the Tabernacle for songs, recitations, ice cream and fellowship.
Over the decades, the observance grew into a multiday celebration featuring parades, music, games, decorated homes and the selection of a royal court. Generations of Mount Tabor families have continued the tradition through volunteer service and community participation.

Mount Tabor was founded in 1869 as a Methodist camp meeting community. Its collection of Victorian cottages and historic community buildings is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
