PARSIPPANY — Mayor Pulkit Desai presented a proclamation declaring September as Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month to Rockaway Township Councilman Jonathan Sackett on Tuesday, September 1, on behalf of a relative of Sackett’s who is a survivor of the disease.
The proclamation states that ovarian cancer is a serious and life-threatening disease that affects thousands of women and families across the United States each year. It notes that approximately 21,000 women in the United States are expected to be diagnosed with ovarian cancer this year, and approximately 12,450 women will lose their lives to the disease.
According to the proclamation, ovarian cancer is often difficult to detect in its early stages, as symptoms can be subtle and there is currently no reliable screening test for women who do not have signs or symptoms. Common warning signs may include persistent bloating, pelvic or abdominal pain or pressure, difficulty eating or feeling full quickly, changes in urinary or bowel habits, back pain, and unusual vaginal bleeding or discharge.
The proclamation adds that increased awareness of the signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer, along with knowledge of personal and family medical history, can empower women to advocate for their health and seek appropriate medical attention. Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month provides an opportunity to honor those who have lost their lives to ovarian cancer, support those currently battling the disease, celebrate survivors, recognize their families and caregivers, and promote continued research, education, and awareness.
The Township of Parsippany-Troy Hills joins communities across the nation in raising awareness of ovarian cancer and offering hope and support to all those whose lives have been affected by the disease. Mayor Desai proclaimed September as Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month in the township and encouraged all residents to learn the signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer, support those affected by the disease, and join in raising awareness and advancing the hope for earlier detection, improved treatments, and, ultimately, a cure.
