PARSIPPANY — A missing white bicycle led to an outpouring of generosity from the Parsippany community, as Police Benevolent Association #131 members stepped in to replace the bike for a young girl named McKenna.
Lieutenant Brian Conover reached out to the family after seeing a post about the missing bike, not only as a police officer but as a father who wanted to help. McKenna’s mother, a social worker, said no one had any obligation to step in, which made the gesture that much more meaningful to her family.

“A toddler’s missing white bike could have been nothing more than an upsetting memory,” she said. “Instead, because of the Parsippany P.B.A. and the kindness of so many people in our community, it has become an opportunity to teach McKenna the more important lesson that there will always be moments when people disappoint us, and we also always have the choice to see where there is good, where there are people willing to show up and help.”
She said she hopes the story encourages others to look for similar opportunities in their own lives — checking on a neighbor, helping someone who is struggling, offering a compliment, returning a shopping cart, paying for someone’s coffee, holding a door open, or simply showing up for a stranger.
With McKenna’s father working as a firefighter and her mother as a social worker, service to others is deeply embedded in the family’s values. She said being on the receiving end of that same spirit of service was touching, and reflects the kind of community they are raising their daughter in.
She added that she doesn’t want one person’s unkind act to become the takeaway from this story. There will always be unkind acts, she said, but there are also always opportunities to respond with kindness.
Lieutenant Brian Conover, Officer James Brennan, Officer Dave Cavaliere, and Mayor Pulkit Desai presented McKenna with her new bike.
