Letter to the Editor: Barberio’s No Godfather, and This Isn’t Hollywood

0

Dear Editor:

I’ve read recently on Facebook these stories regarding the Parsippany Mayoral election. since these folks like to refer to councilman Justin as Fredo, do they also support mayor Barberio as the GODFATHER of Parsippany? A “B” actor in mob movies supporting a failed mayor is not really vey impressive.

Actually, quite embarrassing for both parties.

This is a political election to lead our community, not a “B” MOVIE!

Abandoned Dog Found at Parsippany Apartment Complex

Nina, a sweet senior dog rescued in Parsippany, is now safe and healing—waiting patiently for a forever home filled with love and comfort.

PARSIPPANY — Parsippany Animal Control and Shelter is asking the community to open their hearts to Nina, a senior dog found abandoned, emaciated, and covered in bite wounds at a local apartment complex.

When Animal Control officers discovered her, Nina was limping, starving, and emotionally devastated. “We could tell her heart was broken, even after being abandoned by her person and suffering through the poor care she received from them,” shelter officials shared. “We gave her the name Nina, even though that’s likely not her name, but she seems happy with it.”

Veterinary care revealed that Nina suffers from several age-related, degenerative conditions, including hip dysplasia, knee issues, and arthritis. Despite her challenges, she is steadily improving, thanks to consistent medical treatment, pain management, and nutritious food.

Authorities have not yet released any details about who abandoned her or how long she was left alone.

Described as a low-maintenance companion, Nina wants affection, a warm bed, food, and regular potty breaks. Shelter staff describe her as deeply affectionate and eager to be near people. While she’s wary of cats and keeps her distance, she is not aggressive toward them. However, due to her discomfort around other dogs, it’s recommended that she be the only dog in her new home.

“Nina doesn’t belong in a shelter,” officials posted. “We are looking for an adopter or rescue to brighten her sad eyes. She will be spayed before adoption.”

Those interested in giving Nina the loving home she deserves are encouraged to submit an adoption application. The shelter will review applications and promptly arrange meet-and-greets with suitable adopters.

“We know finding what Nina needs is not easy,” the shelter added, “but we are hopeful she has an angel out there.”

For more information or to apply, click here and fill out the “Animal Control Adoption Application.”

Homeless Solutions Dreams Big with New CEO at 25th Annual Dream Builders’ Bash

Knights of Columbus #359 members John O’Reilly, Edward Thorton, and Mike Wilkey; NJ State Assemblywoman Aura Dunn; HSI Chief Executive Officer Jaclyn Stoll; Knights of Columbus #359 Grand Knight William Kostyak; Boye Foundation representative Kathryn Mancini; NJ State Senator Anthony Bucco; Boye Foundation representatives Anastasia Ireland and Sarah Gregory; HSI Chief Development Officer Stephanie Cicale.

MORRIS COUNTY — Homeless Solutions recently celebrated its 25th Annual Dream Builders’ Bash on Friday, March 28th.

The Bash is the non-profit’s most significant yearly fundraiser. It supports the shelter programs and services it offers to help people who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless in Morris County regain their independence.

This year’s event, “Dream Big, Build Bigger,” celebrated the power of community and honorees who’ve shown extraordinary dedication to HSI. The evening was filled with beautiful tributes and touching stories and was also an introduction of Homeless Solutions’ new CEO Jaclyn Stoll to the steadfast supporters in attendance.

The evening’s honorees included Bob and Nancy Boye of The Boye Foundation, who were given our Dream Builder Award for their decades of philanthropic support to HSI. The Knights of Columbus #359 George Washington Council were awarded the Mary E. Van Kirk Volunteer Spirit Award for their years of dedicated volunteerism to the organization.

An inspirational part of the night came from our guest speaker, PG, a graduate of our Transitional Housing Program who told her story as a single working mother who lost her home to rising Morris County rents. This narrative is becoming all too familiar as we see the waitlist for affordable housing increase exponentially in our community.

She praised HSI’s staff for supporting her, including helping her access much-needed resources that she initially didn’t even know were available. Our THP graduate should also be commended for the intense effort she put forth to secure stability for her family. She took advantage of every opportunity, workshop, and program that she could to help her in her journey back to independence. As she said, “The HSI programs work if you do your part and never give up.”

The Bash guests enjoyed cocktails, dinner, dancing, raffles, silent and live auctions at The Westin Governor Morris in Morristown. HSI CEO Jaclyn Stoll had the pleasure of being joined by local dignitaries such as Senator Anthony Bucco, Assemblywoman Aura Dunn, Morris County Commissioner Christine Meyers, present and past HSI Board of Trustees, and 275 attendees who all came to support HSI’s critical mission of empowering those who are homeless or at risk to attain housing stability. Celebrating 25 years of support for the Dream Builders’ Bash was a beautiful evening, with over $5.3 million raised since its inception in 2000.

Homeless Solutions philosophy is “A Hand Up, not a Handout.” Homeless Solutions has been helping the homeless and at-risk in our community as a private, nonprofit organization since 1983. We are unique in what we do. It’s not just about providing a healthy meal and a place to sleep. They aim to give those we serve the tools and surroundings they need to rebuild their lives and become self-sufficient. What sets our nonprofit apart from others is our continuum of housing options, including our main shelter, Transitional Housing Program (THP) for families, Warming Center for street homeless in the winter, Mt. Kemble Home for senior women, Women’s Campus for single women in shared housing, and the Affordable Rental Housing units we own and operate – in all 136 units of affordable homes for Morris County residents.

Letter to the Editor: Solutions Oriented Leadership: Supporting Councilman Musella

0

Dear Editor:

With the upcoming Republican Party’s contested spot for mayor, I wanted to explain why I am switching my vote from Mayor Barberio to Councilman Musella.

About six months ago, I complained to the mayor and his staff about the dead streetlights on many street corners in Lower Lake Hiawatha and the offensive absence of an American Flag at Lake Hiawatha Park!

I went to his office many times, was rudely told that he wasn’t there, and then walked by me like he couldn’t be bothered! I got excuse after excuse for why they couldn’t help me. Finally, I decided to try a different route and contacted Justin for help. To my surprise, he came out the next day and immediately got to work by getting JCPL and the town on the phone. Within a week, all issues were resolved, and I now proudly see the American Flag that should ALWAYS be there.

Under Mayor Barberio’s watch, Town Hall has suffered from a culture of carelessness and laziness. Our town doesn’t look good, many people don’t take pride in their property and the town hall makes you feel like you work for them when it should be the other way around.

I will vote for Councilman Musella because I believe Lake Hiawatha will be made great again by his aggressive focus on solutions for the people of our community!

Long-Time Lake Hiawatha Resident & Republican,
Harold Marschell

Hofstra Student From Parsippany Helps Beautify the Community During Annual Pride and Plant

0
Approximately 230 Hofstra students went out in the community to help with gardening at neighboring homes as part of the University's annual Pride and Plant event

PARSIPPANY — Cloudy skies didn’t stop Hofstra University student Ashla Coe, a Mechanical Engineering major from Parsippany, from joining more than 230 classmates early Saturday morning to volunteer in the community. Together, they rolled up their sleeves to garden and assist with yard work at local homes as part of Hofstra’s Annual Pride and Plant event. Ashla is a 2024 graduate of Roxbury High School.

The beautification initiative, which began in 2017, connects students with nearby homeowners who need help. It is organized by the Office of Commuting Student Services and Community Outreach, led by Anita Ellis.

Ellis noted that participation more than doubled in 2025, and the number of homes served grew from 49 in 2024 to 76 this year. Students came from a wide range of campus groups, including Greek life, Spirit Support, academic organizations, and Hofstra athletics.

“Events like this make me love what I do at Hofstra even more,” Ellis said. “My heart is full, and I’m so proud of this record number of students who came out early to give back to the community.”

In addition to helping individual homeowners, students also worked on the garden at the John J. Byrne Community Center in Uniondale.

Homeowner Lashay Ferguson expressed her appreciation. “It’s a beautiful thing to be a part of,” she said.

Pride and Plant supports the Hofstra 100 strategic plan, advancing the University’s mission of community engagement—strengthening the region and ensuring all neighborhoods are served and empowered.

With small classes, dedicated faculty, and a beautiful campus just a short distance from New York City, Hofstra University offers students an environment where learning, innovation, and meaningful service go hand in hand.

Parsippany-Troy Hills Water Department to Begin Annual Hydrant Flushing Program

0
A fire hydrant flushes water during the Township of Parsippany-Troy Hills’ annual Hydrant Inspection and Flushing Program, which helps clear mineral deposits from the water system.

PARSIPPANY—Beginning Sunday, April 13, the Township of Parsippany-Troy Hills Water Department will launch its annual Hydrant Inspection and Flushing Program. The initiative, essential to maintaining the township’s water system, will run through Saturday, May 17.

Crews will conduct the flushing overnight, wrapping up each day by 6:00 a.m. The process involves systematically opening fire hydrants to increase water flow, helping flush out minerals and deposits that naturally accumulate in the mains.

While the flushing will not interrupt water service, residents may temporarily experience reduced water pressure or discolored water while crews are working in their neighborhood. This is a normal part of the process and poses no health risks. If discoloration occurs, residents are advised to run their cold water tap until it is clear. It’s also recommended to check the water before using dishwashers or washing machines.

If you continue to notice low water pressure or volume after flushing, inspect your faucet screens for trapped particles.

For specific questions or concerns, residents may contact the Water Department at (973) 263-7099, Monday through Friday, between 7:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
