PARSIPPANY — The final score will show a 1-0 loss, but Parsippany High School walked off the field Thursday with plenty to be proud of.
The Redhawks went toe-to-toe with defending Group 2 state champion Madison and pushed one of New Jersey’s strongest programs to the very final moments before a late free kick decided the game.
Madison entered the matchup with an established championship pedigree after winning the North 2, Group 2 sectional title and then capturing the 2025 Group 2 state championship. Parsippany, however, never looked overwhelmed by the occasion.
From the opening whistle, the Redhawks matched Madison’s intensity and refused to give the defending champions control of the game.
Parsippany defended with discipline, competed for every loose ball, and continued to make Madison work for every opportunity. For nearly the entire match, there was very little separating the two sides.
That alone said a lot about this Parsippany team.
The Redhawks have built momentum throughout the season, but Thursday may have been one of their strongest statements yet. They showed they could stand on the same field with a state championship program and compete at that level for a full match.
Rodrigo Esquivel earned Man of the Match honors after another strong performance, helping Parsippany remain composed and competitive throughout the contest.
But this was not just about one player.
It was a complete team effort.
Parsippany’s defense battled all afternoon. The midfield continued working under pressure, and the Redhawks stayed organized and connected as a group. Every player on the field contributed to keeping Madison off the scoreboard deep into the match.
And Parsippany nearly pulled it off.
With the game still scoreless in the final moments, Madison finally found the breakthrough on a free kick. The late goal gave the Dodgers a 1-0 lead and delivered a heartbreaking ending for a Parsippany side that had been just moments away from earning a result against the defending state champions.
So close, yet so far.
The loss will sting, especially after how hard Parsippany fought, but the performance should give the entire program confidence moving forward.
Players, coaches, students, and supporters have every reason to be proud of what the Redhawks showed Thursday.
Parsippany did not simply hang around against Madison.
They competed with them, and pushed them to the final moments.
And for the entire game, Parsippany looked every bit capable of standing with one of the best teams in the state.
The result may have been a loss, but the performance showed just how far this group has come.
Parsippany belonged on that field.
