PARSIPPANY — Mayor Pulkit Desai presented a proclamation on Tuesday, October 20, declaring October as Filipino American Heritage Month in the Township of Parsippany-Troy Hills.
Filipino American Heritage Month is celebrated annually during October to recognize the rich history, vibrant culture and extraordinary contributions of Filipino Americans who have helped shape the social, cultural and economic fabric of the nation.
The proclamation notes that Filipino Americans have played an important role in American history for more than 400 years, with the earliest documented arrival of Filipinos in what is now the United States dating back to October 18, 1587, when Filipino sailors arrived in present-day California.
Generations of Filipino Americans have made lasting contributions in medicine, education, business, science, technology, the arts, public service and the United States Armed Forces, demonstrating a strong tradition of leadership, perseverance and service to others. Filipino Americans represent one of the largest Asian American populations in the United States, and their deeply rooted values of family, faith, community, hospitality and respect for others continue to enrich the diversity and strength of the nation.
“The Township of Parsippany-Troy Hills proudly celebrates its multicultural community and recognizes the Filipino American residents, families, professionals, and community leaders whose contributions strengthen our Township and promote unity, understanding, and cultural appreciation,” the proclamation states.
The proclamation also describes Filipino American Heritage Month as an opportunity for all residents to learn about Filipino American history, honor the accomplishments of past and present generations and celebrate the traditions and cultural heritage that contribute to the character of the community.
In the proclamation, Mayor Desai encourages all residents to join in recognizing and celebrating the history, heritage, achievements and invaluable contributions of Filipino Americans to the township, the State of New Jersey and the nation.
