PARSIPPANY — Parsippany High School football got back in the win column Friday night, defeating Palisades Park/Leonia, 26-23, on September 25 at Overpeck County Park.
Quarterback Mason Alameda powered the Redhawks on the ground, rushing for three touchdowns, while Shane Petzinger added another rushing score to help Parsippany improve to 3-2 on the season.
The Redhawks came out strong defensively and shut out Palisades Park/Leonia throughout the entire first half. Parsippany controlled the early stages of the game before the home team found its offense after halftime and made things much tighter down the stretch.
Palisades Park/Leonia mounted a second-half rally, scoring 23 points and turning what had been a strong Parsippany performance into a close finish. The Redhawks did enough to hold on, escaping with the three-point victory.
Alameda was at the center of the offensive performance. His three rushing touchdowns accounted for the majority of Parsippany’s scoring and gave the Redhawks a much-needed spark after the offense had been held scoreless in consecutive games.
Parsippany entered Friday coming off back-to-back losses, falling 27-0 to Parsippany Hills and 34-0 to Whippany Park. Before that stretch, the Redhawks had opened the season with victories over Sussex County Tech and North Warren Regional.
Friday’s win stopped the two-game skid and moved Parsippany above .500 at 3-2. It also marked the first time the Redhawks had found the end zone since their September 4 victory over North Warren Regional.
Petzinger also continued to make an impact in the rushing attack with his touchdown. He previously scored in Parsippany’s season-opening victory over Sussex County Tech.
The first-half defensive performance proved especially important once Palisades Park/Leonia began finding success after the break. Holding the opposition scoreless for the opening two quarters gave Parsippany enough room to withstand the late push and leave with the victory.
Parsippany will return home on Friday, October 2, when the Redhawks host Kinnelon at 7:00 p.m.
