PARSIPPANY — A fundraiser for Parsippany sanitation worker and longtime Mount Tabor Volunteer Fire Department member Anthony Shandra raised more than $26,000, organizers said.
More than 250 admission tickets were sold for “Parsippany Strong: Pasta & Prizes for a Blue Collar Brother,” held Saturday, September 12, at the Police Athletic League of Parsippany-Troy Hills, 33 Baldwin Road. The event featured a pasta dinner and a tricky tray.
Shandra, a member of the Mount Tabor Volunteer Fire Department for more than 20 years, was seriously injured on the morning of Tuesday, April 28, while working on the back of a sanitation truck during his shift. He underwent surgery and faces a long recovery, including significant medical expenses and an extended absence from work.
Members of the Order Sons of Italy in America – Lodge 2561 prepared the dinner, and the Elks supplied and served the desserts.
Patrick Campbell, President of the Parsippany Blue Collar Workers Union, thanked those who made the event possible.
“I want to thank all of the blue-collar workers who helped make this event possible, as well as the businesses and residents who donated, and everyone who came out to attend and support Anthony. A special thank-you goes to the Sons of Italy for cooking, the Elks for serving, the PAL for hosting us, and the Mount Tabor Fire Department for their help. It takes a lot of people coming together to make an event like this happen, and seeing everyone step up for Anthony is truly special. It’s events like this that make me proud to be a Parsippany resident and employee,” Campbell said.
Parsippany-Troy Hills Mayor Pulkit Desai said: “Parsippany has always been a community that comes together when one of its own needs help. In Parsippany we take care of each other. Anthony has given years of service to this township, and seeing residents, local organizations, and businesses step up for him is exactly what makes this such a special place to call home.”
