PARSIPPANY โ A 59-year-old Parsippany man was arrested on Tuesday, September 22, after police said he was driving with a suspended license and under the influence of alcohol on Route 46 East.
At approximately 2:45 p.m., Parsippany-Troy Hills Patrolman Shalin Patel was on patrol on Route 46 East when he observed a gray Volkswagen traveling eastbound in the far-left lane. A random registration check revealed that the registered ownerโs driverโs license was suspended.
Patrolman Patel initiated a motor vehicle stop near South Edwards Road. The driver continued at a slow rate of speed before stopping at the entrance to Rutgers Lane. The driver, identified as Airick J. Grable, provided a New Jersey identification card and told the officer he was aware his license was suspended.
While speaking with Grable, Patrolman Patel detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath and observed that his speech was slurred and his eyes appeared glassy. A records check confirmed the suspended license and revealed an active warrant out of Newark Municipal Court with $1,000 bail. Patrolman Denis DeMuro responded to assist, and Grable was taken into custody on the warrant.
Patrolman DeMuro then administered standardized field sobriety tests. According to the report, Grable showed six of six clues on the horizontal gaze nystagmus test, five of eight clues on the walk-and-turn test and three of four clues on the one-leg-stand test. During the testing, Grable became combative and directed profanity at the officer. He was arrested for driving while intoxicated and transported to Police Headquarters. His vehicle was towed by Corigliano Towing.
At headquarters, Grable was advised of his Miranda rights and refused to provide breath samples, according to Patrolman James Brennan, who operated the Alcotest instrument.
Newark Municipal Court advised that Grable be released on his own recognizance on the warrant. He was issued the following summonses:
- Driving While Intoxicated (N.J.S.A. 39:4-50)
- Driving While License Suspended (N.J.S.A. 39:3-40)
- Refusal to Submit to Breath Test (N.J.S.A. 39:4-50.2)
- Open Container of Alcohol in a Motor Vehicle (N.J.S.A. 39:4-51b)
Grable was released to his wife at approximately 6:00 p.m. He is scheduled to appear in Parsippany-Troy Hills Municipal Court on Tuesday, November 3, at 2:30 p.m.
