Jashan By Dhaba: A โ€œCelebration of Indian Foodโ€

0
Jashan By Dhaba is located at 252 Route 46 West, Parsippany

MORRIS COUNTY โ€” If you are a world traveler and fortunate enough to take that 8,000 miles plus trip to India, you would probably quickly notice that all along their highways you will find numerous small, rustic, roadside eateries serving whatever local cuisine is common for that region.ย  These comforting and charming eateries, known for their tasty, healthy, satisfying food are called โ€œDhabaโ€.

A spacious, classy, and somewhat upscale ambiance awaits you within

Many people must travel far and wide to find a top-notch, truly authentic, traditional Indian restaurant with all those savory and unique tastes and spices that this fare is known for. If you are not up for that 8000-mile trip at this moment but happen to be a long-time fan of Indian cuisine, or just want to experience a different, and fun, culinary adventure, you will find Jashan by Dhaba more than ready to fill that need. Located right on Route 46 West in an attractive looking, stand-alone building, with eye-catching attractive, orange signage, Jashan by Dhaba, which describes itself as an Indian and Indo-Chinese Restaurant and Party Hall, literally translates to โ€œcelebrationโ€, or as they like to say, a โ€œcelebration of Indian foodโ€, and it just might be the place you are looking for.

Opened in September of 2019 (formerly the site of Mirchi) by the owner, Ankush Punhani, Jashan by Dhaba prides itself on offering a wide variety of dishes from the various regional areas of India, as well as some from Indochina, with an emphasis on Northern Indian fare, while still offering choices from the South.ย  Many would describe Indian cuisine as being spicy, rich, flavorful, and diverse; of course, none of that should scare you off as your dish would be highly dependent on what you order and the degree of spiciness (heat) you prefer.ย  And, when I mention that, I mean it as a good thing, as I personally enjoy my food with a flavorful kick.

Formerly the site of Mirchi

With that in mind, do yourself a favor and do not allow a lack of familiarity with the extensive menu, different, aromatic spices, or unaccustomed language to intimidate you.ย  You will be depriving yourself of one of the great cuisines of the world if you do.ย  The attentive wait staff at Jashan, who were all effusive and accommodating during my visit will gladly help guide you along the way; and as I have found, it is not that complicated or confusing once you get a grasp on some basic Indian phrases and cooking techniques.ย  Or you can always follow the old rule of thumb; If you ever find yourself where you do not know the food, take cues from the tables of people who look like they might have grown up with the cuisine.ย  Never a bad tip!

A spacious, classy, and somewhat upscale ambiance awaits you within.ย  A pleasant, nicely appointed, modern, semi-formal setting, that still manages to make you feel cozy and comfortable with ethnic dรฉcor throughout, and soft Indian music playing in the background.ย  Sparkling clean and clearly in full conformance with all current health (COVID) protocols, one should feel safe dining at this establishment.ย  A restaurantโ€™s appearance sets a tone, raises our expectations and suggests that the owner cares as much about our comfort as he does about the food they serve.ย  Jashan by Dhaba has made that effort and succeeded.

Asif Naim and Pat Minutillo

A foodie friend of mine, who loves Indian food, has been praising this venue for a while, so I invited him along for this review and as a helpful guide.ย  Our host and waiter, Asif Naim, could not have been more accommodating to our needs.ย  As suggested by Asif, we sat at one of the restaurants several comfortable, plush leather, semi-circular booths.ย  Gave us plenty of room to spread out!ย  The very amiable and personable General Manager, Purushottam-Pudasaini, joined us at our table to welcome us, and we had an opportunity for a very enjoyable chat. Puru, as he told us to call him, prior to managing Jashan grew up in Nepal and started his career in the food industry as a dishwasher before eventually finding his way to Dubai, where he managed the Ritz-Carlton for 13 years, then onto San Diego, where he managed 5 different Indian restaurants at the same time. ย In 2019 he found his way to Jashan by Dhaba.ย  Puru told me that โ€œhe loves what he does and finds it very personally rewardingโ€.ย  He went on, โ€œmaking people happy, organizing special events in peopleโ€™s lives, setting up corporate and private events, and ensuring great service and customer comfort is very important.โ€ย ย  When asked what he likes about New Jersey, he stated, โ€œI like the four different seasons the most, as they remind me of growing up in Nepalโ€.

Soya Chop Achari

As soon as we were seated our wine was uncorked, poured, and placed in an ice bucket as we began to peruse our phone-generated menu.ย  By the way, I should mention that Jashan is a BYOB, so bring along your favorite. The large menu offers a nice selection of vegetarian, meat, fish, and egg dishes.ย  There is an emphasis on lamb, goat, and chicken for your meat selection.ย For you steak lovers, you will not find that on the menu. Asif, our waiter, was there to helpfully answer our questions, offer advice, and provide guidance along the way.

We started with the Galouti Kebab; minced lamb patties that came with two of the chefโ€™s special sauces.ย Very moist and flavorful, and the sauces were a great accompaniment.ย  Three nice-sized patties, so there was plenty to share.ย  Asif then returned with a complimentary dish that he thought we would like; Soya Chop Achari. This vegetarian dish, made primarily from soybeans, was delicious.ย The taste was nicely textured, somewhat chewy, and creamy inside with a slightly crispy shell. The seasoning was perfect and spicy.ย  There was certainly a lot going with multiple layers of flavors and spices hitting your taste buds.ย The spiciness was also perfect, not too hot, but just enough to hit you with a few waves of pleasant heat.

Goat Vindaloo

For entrees, I chose to go with Goat Vindaloo, while my friend chose the Saffron Chicken.ย  Goat Vindaloo was not on the menu (lamb is), but they gladly made it for me. I was given a choice of my heat level, from 1 to 10. I chose a 7, but I could have gone higher. Next time!ย  The goat meat was fall off the bone savory and delicious, tender, and juicy. The taste of goat is slightly less sweet than beef and not the least bit gamey (as some people believe), and blended perfectly with the saucy, spicy, curry dish, Vindaloo. The Saffron Chicken, which I did get to taste, was extremely flavorful. A spicy dish, yet sort of sweet, aromatic, and earthy, with the scent and flavor of saffron clearly prominent. This was the first time I tried this gorgeous golden-colored dish, and its complexity demonstrates why Indian cuisine is considered one of the most flavorful cuisines in the world.

Garlic Naan

For sides, we went with some tasty Garlic Naan, and Biryani Rice. The Biryani Rice was courteously prepared for us as a special sample of the rice typically served with a traditional Indian Biryani dish.ย This delectable rice dish derives its, multitude of flavors, and special tastes through the blending of many diverse spices.ย  I do not know how they do it, but it was excellent!

Staying in gavone mode, despite being totally satiated, I still had to try their dessert; Gulab Jamon. I mean, you have to do what you have to do, right!ย  Round, milk-based, fried delicacies, sweet-tasting treats that melt in your mouth, soaked in a rose-watered scented syrup, it was a perfect way to cap off this feast.ย Jashan by Dhaba is certainly a โ€œcelebration of Indian food.โ€

Beautiful Ambiance and Vibe

Great food, outstanding, friendly, and attentive service, beautiful ambiance and vibe, very reasonable prices, large private parking lot, BYOB. ย I would recommend you stop in and enjoy an evening at Jashan.

CDC Says fully Vaccinated People Can Stop Wearing Masks

0
People who are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 no longer need to wear masks or physically distance

MORRIS COUNTY โ€” The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced that people who are fully vaccinated against Covid-19 no longer need to wear masks or physically distance โ€” whether indoors or outdoors in most circumstances.

“We have all longed for this moment when we can get back to some sense of normalcy,” CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky said during a media briefing Thursday afternoon.

“Based on the continuing downward trajectory of cases, the scientific data on the performance of our vaccines, and our understanding of how the virus spreads,” Walensky said, “that moment has come for those who are fully vaccinated.”

The new recommendations come more than a year after the CDC first suggested that Americans should wear masks to protect against spreading or catching the coronavirus. At that time, the U.S. was logging more than 1,000 COVID-19 deaths a day.

A person is considered fully vaccinated two weeks after the last dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. That gives the immune system enough time to develop antibodies against the virus. According to CDC data, more than 35 percent of the population has now been fully vaccinated.

There are a few caveats, however. People who have compromised immune systems, for example, should talk to their doctors about continuing with mitigation measures. And even fully vaccinated people may still be asked to wear masks in certain places, such as in hospitals or other health care settings, as well as public transportation.

“Right now for travel, we’re asking people to wear their masks,” Walensky said. “We still have the requirement to wear masks when you travel on buses, trains, and other forms of public transportation.”

Even though the vaccines work well, they are not perfect, and breakthrough infections can occur. Of the more than 117 million people in the U.S. who have been fully vaccinated, 9,245 later tested positive for Covid-19. Those illnesses have generally been mild.

For now, the CDC guidance only applies to those who have been fully vaccinated. Soon, that group will include kids ages 12 and older, now that the CDC and Food and Drug Administration have both signed off on Covid-19 vaccines for that age group.

The CDC is expected to update its guidance on children in school and summer camps soon.

Vaccination Center Now Inoculating 12- to 15-Year-Old Minors

Developing a vaccine could take a year or more, and hydroxychloroquine can be used to treat and prevent COVID-19 right now, Senator Pennacchio said

MORRIS COUNTY โ€” The Morris County Regional COVID-19 Vaccination Center at the Rockaway Townsquare Mall began vaccinating children aged 12 and up this morning, under an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) issued by the federal Food and Drug Administration allowing the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine for use on children younger than 16 years old.

While expanding the vaccine use, anyone under 18 years old will still be required to be accompanied by a parent or guardian to receive the vaccine. The Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines have only been approved for those 18 years and older.

Vaccinations at the Rockaway Township facility will be provided to any New Jersey resident, and walk-ups at the facility will be accepted from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday. The hours of been extended today to 7:45 p.m. for walk-ups.

Starting this weekend, the Center will be closed on Sundays and Mondays.

Appointments also are available and offer a wider range of hours.

Letter to the Editor: I support Judy Hernandez

0

parsippany focusDear Editor:

I have had the pleasure of working with Judy Hernandez for the past three years on the Parsippany Environmental Advisory Board and I am happy to consider her my friend. I support her campaign for Parsippany Township Council.

Judy has dedicated her life to making the world a better place by becoming an Environmental and Civil Engineer. She has professional experience by working on projects from the proposal, to contracts and planning stages, to design and constructions.

She is a 21 year resident of Parsippany, raised her family here and she has been involved locally with school, community groups, and township committees.

Judy has worked to support the world around her and in her current role as the Vice-Chair of the Parsippany Environmental Advisory board and the Mayorโ€™s appointee on the Planning board, she is working to make the planet and Parsippany more sustainable.

I have lived in the Mount Tabor part of Parsippany all of my life, raised my children here and now my children are raising their children here, and I believe Judy is one of the most qualified individuals to serve on the Town Council. She understands that helping people of our community comes before politics and will always strive to do the right thing.

Judy is open to new ideas, listens carefully by considering all sides, and will work with the mayor and the rest of the council to address the issues that affect our community and our people.

I have complete confidence in Judy and her passion to keep Parsippany on the road to sustainability for future generations. She will do whatever she can to keep Parsippany the best town for every single resident who lives here.

I am making the right choice for Parsippany and voting for Judy Hernandez for Town Council.

Team Barberio Holds Successful Fundraiser

0
Team Barberio: Debbie Orme, Jamie Barberio and Frank Neglia

LIVINGSTON โ€” On Tuesday, May 4, Team Barberio held its first $900 per-person fundraiser at Neroโ€™s Grille in Livingston. The gathering featuring a prime rib dinner included Parsippany’s former Township Attorney John Inglesino, Ryan D. Graham, Director of Business Development for Fairview Insurance Agency, and dozens of other professionals who served the township under Barberio during his initial eight years as mayor. Fairview Insurance handled Parsippany’s Employee Benefits.

In the Republican Primary to be held on Tuesday, June 8, Team Barberio which includes Barberio for Mayor and council candidates Frank Neglia and Deborah Orme will face off against mayoral candidate Lou Valori and his team of council candidates Justin Musella and Gary Martin. Also running for council is former Council Vice President Robert Peluso.

In 2017, Peluso challenged Barberio in the primary and lost. Then in the general election, Barberio lost to the current Mayor Michael Soriano, by approximately 800 votes.

The winner of the Republican primary will face off Soriano and his council candidates Cori Herbig and Judy Hernandez during the General Election in November.

Since leaving office, Barberio was the Business Administrator in Englewood Cliffs. His reappointment was rejected in 2019 by the council, which was made up of five Democrats and just one Republican.

He then surfaced in Hunterdon County, where he is the administrator in two towns โ€“ Tewksbury and Lebanon. He splits his time between both. Ironically Justin Marchetta, of the law firmย Inglesino, Webster, Wyciskala & Taylor was appointed Township Attorney in 2020.

As for the mayorโ€™s race in general, former county freeholder John Cesaro was at one time considered a candidate. But that ended when Cesaro was charged by the state Attorney Generalโ€™s Office with accepting bribes from a โ€œcooperating witnessโ€ who wanted legal work if indeed Cesaro became mayor. That case remains pending.

Back in early February 2020 current Parsippany Mayor Michael Soriano gave his โ€œstate of the townshipโ€ address. It wasnโ€™t remarkably divisive, although the mayor did criticize the tax policies of Barberio. He said that when the GOP ran the show, property tax increases were avoided in 2013 and 2017, two election years. But this had nothing to do with fiscal prudence, just politics. Soriano asserted that artificially avoiding increases in election years just means the bill has to be paid later.

“Barberio held the first event as a mayoral candidate is a high-dollar fundraiser located in Essex County. It makes me wonder how passionate he is about taking this seat back from the Mayor he lost it to in 2017,โ€ said Robert Blake in an email to Parsippany Focus. “Parsippany businesses are hurting as a result of the pandemic. We have a multitude of options right here in the township that would suit any type of political event. Hosting his kickoff event in Livingston is a slap in the face to the hardworking business owners of Parsippany who have been hanging by a thread for over a year now.โ€

Parsippany Focus reached out to Barberio but he didn’t answer our questions.

Lakeland Hills Family YMCA Encourages Older Adults to โ€œEngage at Every Age”

0
File Photo

MORRIS COUNTY โ€” The Lakeland Hills Family YMCA proves every day that there is no age limit on eating healthy, getting active, and being social. May is Older Americans Month and the Y is emphasizing the importance of being active and involved, no matter where or when you are in life. All individuals are encouraged to develop behaviors that are crucial to healthy aging, including healthy eating, increasing physical activity, and social interaction – especially adults over age 50.

The Lakeland Hills Family YMCA is a community organization focused on healthy living, social responsibility, and youth development. In fact, at the Y โ€œolder adultsโ€ are not called โ€œseniorsโ€, but rather are referred to as โ€œactive agersโ€. Adults 50 years and older currently make up more than 30 percent of the U.S. population, and will soon represent 45 percent of all Americans. Here in the Morris County area, adults 50 and older make up 41 percent of the population. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) suggest that adults 50 and older have a 70 percent chance of developing at least one chronic disease. While these numbers seem daunting, the good news is that making small lifestyle changes that include increasing physical activity, eating healthier, and staying active socially can help older adults live better.

โ€œDue to COVID-19โ€™s potential effect on our older members, we know that many have been staying home for their health. As the community reopens, we know that health is top of mind as people return to their regular routines,โ€ said Alex Martinez, President, and CEO of the Lakeland Hills Family YMCA. โ€œIf you need help, support or just a place to get started, community-based organizations such as the Y provide the needed guidance to help older adults age well.โ€

The Lakeland Hills Family YMCA offers many ways for older adults to live healthier lives, including six evidence-based health initiatives as part of its Chronic Disease Prevention Program. One of them is Enhanceยฎ Fitness, a 16-week evidence-based physical activity program proven to increase the physical, mental, and social functioning of older adults โ€“ particularly those with arthritis.

According to the CDC, 52 million Americans have arthritis, including about half of all adults over age 65. Almost 23 million Americans report that arthritis limits their physical activity. Research has shown that low-intensity physical activity performed on a regular basis can reduce pain, improve functioning, elevate mood, and delay the onset of disability.

Participants in Enhanceยฎ Fitness attend three, one-hour classes per week taught by a certified Y instructor. Classes feature proven aerobic, strength training, balance, and flexibility exercises that are safe, effective, and modifiable for a variety of fitness levels. After four months, fitness assessments are conducted to track participantsโ€™ progress. In addition to physical benefits, the program provides a fun, social atmosphere that fosters relationships between program participants.

This program has been popular beyond anyoneโ€™s expectations. Those who have taken these classes were some of the first individuals back to the Y when doors re-opened last fall.

In addition to the arthritis program, the Lakeland Hills Family YMCA offers five additional Chronic Disease Prevention Programs. They are the Cardiac Care Maintenance Program for individuals who have recovered from a cardiac incident; Blood Pressure Self-Monitoring Program for individuals who

have Hypertension; the MS One-Step Program for individuals who have Multiple Sclerosis; the LIVESTRONG at the YMCA Program for individuals with cancer or who are cancer survivors; and the Diabetes Prevention Program for individuals diagnosed with Prediabetes.

Most of the Chronic Disease Prevention Programs are offered at no or low cost, and most do not require a Y membership. For more information on these programs please visit the Yโ€™s website at www.lakelandhillsymca.com or call Anthony Shovlowsky at (973) 507-7040.

Youโ€™re Invited: The Y is inviting everyone from the community to participate in their free outdoor โ€œSeniorโ€ Health and Wellness event on Wednesday, May 26 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Sponsored by Sunrise Senior Living at Mountain Lakes and Unicity Senior Advisors, the Y is putting the FUN in fitness. Blood pressure checks, fitness classes, memory games, and more! Additionally, an ice cream truck will be there with free ice cream, a 90th birthday celebration for Y members turning 90 years old, and enter to win a free Older Adult membership, whether you are a current member or guest!

While the CDC recommends that older adults get a minimum of 30 minutes of moderate exercise or strength training per day, less than one out of three Americanโ€™s 65 and older meet these guidelines. Swimming and aquatic programs may reduce the risk of muscle loss as one age and reduce the risk of osteoporosis as well as improve cardiovascular endurance, flexibility, and mental well-being. The Lakeland Hills Family YMCA offers aquatic fitness classes in addition to their slate of lessons and programs.

For nearly 60 years, Older Americans Month has been observed to recognize older Americans and their contributions to our communities. Led by the Administration for Community Livingโ€™s Administration on Aging, every May offers the opportunity to hear from, support, and celebrate our nationโ€™s elders. For more information on how your family can live a healthy, active life, visit www.lakelandhillsymca.com or call Rosemary Linder Day at [email protected].

As always, no other organization can impact as many, as powerfully, as the Y does every day.

PARSIPPANY โ€” Town hall announced that it will reopen its doors to the public on Monday, Monday, May 24 for regular business. Town Hall and all municipal buildings will be available to residents for in-person business beginning that same day. All visitors must continue to wear a mask, practice social distancing, avoid crowding in the hallways, and wash hands whenever possible.

This announcement comes as a response to the State of New Jerseyโ€™s announcement of the removal of gathering percentage limits for indoor business, outdoor business, and places of worship.

According to the Morris County Office of Emergency Management, any business, whether indoors or outdoors, that is subject to a percentage capacity limitation will instead be guided by the rule regarding six feet of distance between persons or groups of persons.

โ€œIโ€™m happy to welcome residents back to our buildings,โ€ said Mayor Michael Soriano. โ€œItโ€™s been a long time coming. Weโ€™re 14 months into this pandemic, so we all know the drill. With the help of our residents continuing to be safe and smart, this is a major step in getting our township, our business, and our community back to normal.โ€

Previously, Town Hall and other municipal buildings were closed to the public, and only open to those with appointments. This will no longer be the case, and residents can access these buildings provided that residents continue to wear masks and practice social distancing while on the premises.

Churrasco Grill: Serving Delicious, Authentic, Unique, and Flavorful Cuisine

Churrasco Grill (Argentine & Peruvian Cuisine) is located at 137 North Beverwyck Road, Lake Hiawatha

PARSIPPANY โ€”ย As you travel down the full 8/10ths of a mile of North Beverwyck Road, of what is downtown Lake Hiawatha, most people not familiar with the area would easily be deceived into thinking that there is no way that hidden among an unassuming, and quite frankly, an unimpressive row of sporadic little storefronts, there lies a myriad of ethnically diverse, high quality, family-owned culinary gems.

A myriad of ethnically diverse, high quality, family-owned culinary gems

This dining experience took me to the south end of that stretch to yet another relatively small, family-owned, store-front eatery that can easily be considered one of those hidden gems.ย Churrasco Grill, which has been a staple in Lake Hiawatha since 2005, is well known to many locals for serving delicious, authentic, unique, and flavorful cuisine originating from the beautiful Countries of Argentina and Peru.

Churrasco might be a little place in size but is big on flavor and individualized customer service and care; a genuinely welcoming and friendly venue, complete with a wood charcoal grill, imported from Argentina to maintain the tradition and authenticity of the dishes, as well as a rotisserie oven which together might be considered the stars of the restaurant.

Empanadas

The open kitchen atmosphere, which unfortunately is currently obstructed from full view due to COVID-related protective barriers, will hopefully be enjoyed again in the not-too-distant future; where you be able to watch, and smell, your steak, seafood, or other personal selection being cooked to your personal perfection.ย Churrasco Grill, snuggled within a row of other storefronts can be easy to pass by if you are unfamiliar with the area, but their eye-catching signage out front helps make it stand out and easy to locate.ย  The interior is classy and nicely decorated, providing a relaxing Latin American ambiance; cozy, casual, warm, and inviting with colorful and attractive South American inspired original oil paintings, all created by the ownerโ€™s daughter, Claudia, (who was also our attentive and cordial server) adorning the walls throughout the restaurant.ย  The light from the front windows keeps the interior bright, intimate, and airy, accentuating the limited but well-appointed tables.ย I should mention that Churrasco is immaculately clean, the tables are well separated, and they ensure that everything is in full compliance with all current health and safety protocols, and it is BYOB.ย  There is a liquor store just a truly short walk away in case you forget to bring along your favorite bottle of vino.ย  Street parking only for this establishment but there is plenty of available spots in that area.

For those hesitant about dining indoors, Churrasco does offer outdoor dining (comedor al aire libre)ย ย  in a comfortable and nicely decorated enclosed courtyard in the rear of the restaurant.ย  The Courtyard is available, weather permitting, and as of this writing is being thoughtfully decorated with additional tables, plantings, and other decorative items in preparation for our quickly arriving, comfortable outdoor conditions.ย  An exceptionally large, colorful, floral wall mural, again painted by Claudia, highlights the exterior wall and certainly adds to the South American vibe.

Churrasco Grill is a true family affair in every sense of the word.ย  Owner, Juan โ€œJoseโ€ Perez, who everyone knows simply as Jose, enjoys working with his two sons, Juan Jose Jr. and Christopher, and daughter, Claudia, together with running all day-to-day operations of the restaurant. Carmen Perez, Joseโ€™s wife, also prepares all the delicious homemade desserts. It was clear to see Joseโ€™s great pride in his family, and in his restaurant, as he walked me through a requested tour.ย  He was sure to point out Claudiaโ€™s artwork, especially a painting called, โ€œLine of Nazcaโ€ which hung above our table and is representative of Peruvian ancient culture. Jose also pointed out some intricate decorative cork that he obviously saved from hundreds, if not thousands, of wine bottles to painstakingly create a decorative touch to accentuate his walls.ย  He obviously has a lot more patience than I do.

Shrimp Iza
House Salad

Jose, a great host, and true gentleman, and a pleasure to talk to, recounted that he was born in the wine-rich province of Mendoza, Argentina, and arrived in American in 1971 speaking little to no English. As many exceptional restauranteurs do, he learned his craft and paid his culinary dues by experiencing and working at many jobs at various restaurants while honing his restaurant and management skills.ย ย  As a busboy, waiter, short-order cook, he went from a French restaurant to Top of the Sixes, to Rockefeller Center, and even as a short-order cook in a fast-food steak eatery on 42nd Street, all in NYC in the โ€™70s and โ€™80s, finally making his way to Lake Hiawatha in 2005.

Ceviche

As our discussion continued, my group ordered some of Churrascoโ€™s most popular appetizers; the Shrimp Iza, Ceviche, House Salad, and Empanadas.ย  The Shrimp Iza; nicely prepared with good size sautรฉed shrimp with garlic served over a generous bed of baby spinach, along with sides of yuca that were soft and tender on the inside while light and crispy on the outside, exactly right.ย  The 4 homemade baked Empanadas (beef, chicken, and mushroom), which is one serving, were deliciously crispy, crunchy, and loaded with savory, juicy, tasteful fillings.ย  The House Salad offered a bright and fresh presentation of Romaine, cucumbers, tomatoes, and onions, while the citrusy taste and spicy flavors of the fresh Ceviche, a true seafood treat, was certainly a star addition to the meal.ย  The portion sizes of each dish were ample and more than adequate for our group to share and enjoy.

Mix Grill (flank steak, sausage, pork loin, chicken breast served with grilled potato and tomato onion salad)

Looking over the menu which offered a nice combination of Argentinian and Peruvian cuisine, it was a tough challenge to decide between the seafood and meat selections.ย We all eventually went carnivore this evening and ordered the Mix Grill (flank steak, sausage, pork loin, chicken breast served with grilled potato and tomato onion salad) and Churrasco (wood charcoal grilled skirt steak served with potato and vegetables).ย We all thoroughly enjoyed our meat dishes which were cooked perfectly to our individual and separate specifications; well-seasoned, nicely grilled, tender, moist, juicy, expertly marinated, and savory. Plus, this is a generously sized serving of meat so bring your appetite.

Churrasco (wood charcoal grilled skirt steak served with potato and vegetables)

Obviously, by now I was adequately stuffed but Carmenโ€™s (Joseโ€™s wife) homemade Argentinian and Peruvian desserts await. As we sipped on our Espresso and Cappuccinoโ€™s out came the Tiramisu and Alfajores, compliments of Jose.ย  Alfajores, little cakes filled with Dulche de Leche (a thick caramel sauce-like filling) are petite, yet decadent, creamy, crumbly little treats that went particularly well with our coffees.ย  Of course, the Tiramisu (ladyfingers soaked in espresso and rum and laced with creamy mascarpone) is always a winner.

Alfajores

Thanks to Jose and his family for the great meal and sincere hospitality. Nice size portions, reasonable prices, outstanding and friendly service, beautiful ambiance (inside and out).ย Churrasco should most definitely be on your must-try list of wonderful, local, family-owned and operated restaurants.ย I certainly would recommend giving it a try.ย ย  I am confident you will be happy you did.

MORRIS COUNTY โ€” T.C. McCourt, A.J. Oliver, and Dina Mikulka announced the formation of their joint candidate committee, A Stronger Morris.ย The committee will be the primary fundraising and messaging vehicle for the Democratic candidates’ย campaign for Morris County Commissioner.

T.C. McCourt

Candidates McCourt, Oliver, and Mikulka released the following joint statement:

“Campaigns cost money.ย A lot of money.ย And they require an army of volunteers.ย By forming this committee early, we will be able to maximize our fundraising potential and more effectively build the campaign infrastructure that we will need to win in November.”

“The three of us are running for County Commissioner for some pretty simple reasons. While our opponents think everything is perfect and that there is no room for improvement, we profoundly disagree. We believe Morris County can be better. ย We believe Morris County can be stronger. Over the course of the next six months, we intend to prove that to the people of Morris County, and give them the opportunity to make a change.”

A Stronger Morris is proud to have Leslye Moya serve as Campaign Chair. Moya is the Political Director of the Morris County Democratic Committee and Secretary of the Morris County Young Democrats. A resident of Butler, Moya previously led the field organization that helped to elect Dover’s first Black and first female Mayor in 2019.

“We are so proud of the team we’ve assembled thus far. ย Through Leslye and Austin’sย participation, we are two steps closer to victory in November.ย And as the team grows, so will our potential to win.”

A Stronger Morris is presently interviewing applicants for the position of Campaign Manager, which they intend to fill at the beginning of June.

Morris County Maintains AAA Financial Rating

0

MORRIS COUNTY โ€” Moodyโ€™s Investors Service again issued its top, AAA rating of Morris Countyโ€™s financial stability in its review of $5.2 million in county guaranteed bonds offered through the Morris County Improvement Authority in connection with a Whippany Firehouse project.

โ€œFor the 46th straight year, and probably the toughest year, Morris County earned the AAA rating by being proactive in the face of the pandemic.ย  Moodyโ€™s recognized our strong governmental and financial management, whereby Morris County delivers outstanding services while keeping county property taxes significantly lower than neighboring counties,โ€ said Director Stephen Shaw of the Morris County Board of County Commissioners.

โ€œThe strategic planning task force was very important in Morris Countyโ€™s comprehensive pandemic response, including our number one vaccination rate in the state, while maintaining county operations to save lives and livelihoods,โ€ he added, referring to a task force that monitored economic impacts and planning early on in the pandemic.

RATING RATIONALE

Moodyโ€™s explained its assessment of Morris County finances in a report issued earlier today:

โ€œThe AAA rating reflects the county’s substantial tax base, strong and diverse economy, healthy reserve levels, and modest debt burden. The rating also reflects a long trend of strong, proactive financial management Although the pandemic has had a negative impact throughout the state, Morris County’s credit quality has not been impacted.

The county created a Covid-19 Strategic Planning Advisory Committee, which meets regularly and has implemented a variety of measures to reduce the impact. The county’s largest revenue, property taxes, is guaranteed by its constituent municipalities.โ€

SAVINGS FOR TAXPAYERS

The AAA rating benefits everyone in Morris Countyย by allowing the county to take advantage of the best possible interest and financing rates when borrowing or bonding is needed for major projects, saving taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars annually.ย  The rating permits the county and local government agencies within Morris County to take advantage of those low bonding and borrowing rates. It is akin to having an exceptional personal credit rating because it reflects the ability of the county to meet its financial commitments. Obligations that are rated AAA are determined to be the highest quality, with the lowest credit risk.

RATING OUTLOOK

Moodyโ€™s also rated Morris County with a stable outlook.

โ€œThe stable outlook reflects our expectation that the county’s financial position will remain strong over the near term and that the county will continue to benefit from its substantial and diverse tax base and above-average wealth levels.โ€

REPORT

The bonds that were subject to the rating are being issued to currently refund the Improvement Authorityโ€™s County Guaranteed Governmental Loan Project Notes, Series 2020 issued by the Authority in the amount of $5,885,000 on August 3, 2020.ย  They were originally issued to provide funds to make a loan and to purchase the Bond Anticipation Note (in 2019) of the Fire District #2 in the Township of Hanover, where the design and construction of a new firehouse on Fire District-owned property were financed.
