Council to review ordinance to raise fees of off-duty officers

During the next council meeting on Tuesday, August 20, the Council plans to continue its discussion of an ordinance which would raise fees rendered by off-duty police officers.

The regular rate would increase from $50.00 per hour to $65.00 per hour, increased to $75.00 per hour in 2015, and the premium rate, including overtime (also considered any day after eight hours) would raise from $75.00 per hour to $85.00 per hour and an increase to $97.50 per hour in 2015. Also, an administrative fee would go from $5.00 per hour to $10.00.00 per hour.

The last time the rates were increased, according to council members, was 2007, and the request now comes from the PBA’s surveys of surrounding towns. They submitted a spreadsheet to the township, with new rates that would reflect similar areas.

During the agenda meeting of August 6, Councilman Michael dePierro asked  why this proposal wasn’t submitted  when we are negotiating contracts? He would rather see discussions during the PBA’s contract negotiations.

During that meeting  thirty-plus members of the Police Benevolent Association (PBA) and Superior Officers Association (SOA) unions come out to support the ordinance change.
