Man arrested on DWI, cell phone use


A Parsippany man was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated after being pulled over for using a cell phone, Hopatcong police said.

Gerardo Betancourt, 49, was driving on Hopatchung Road onto Lakeside Boulevard on June 16 when an officer saw him cross over the double yellow line and using a cell phone to text while driving.

The officer stopped him, and Betancourt gave the officer a Honduras driver’s license. Betancourt told police he was an illegal alien, according to police.

He was given a field sobriety test and failed. He was arrested and given the Alcotest. Betancourt was charged with reckless driving, driving while intoxicated, failure to keep right and cell phone violation. He was held until Immigration Customs Enforcement was contacted. Immigration advised that he could be released.

Betancourt was released to a friend.
