The Woman’s Club of Parsippany-Troy Hills is marking Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month this February.
The club recently coordinated a proclamation from Parsippany Mayor James R Barberio.
The club also distributed one thousand bookmarks with dating violence information to Parsippany High and Parsippany Hills High Schools.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, in a nationwide survey, 9.4 percent of high school students report being hit, slapped, or physically hurt on purpose by their boyfriend or girlfriend and approximately 1 in 5 women and nearly 1 in 7 men who ever experienced rape, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner, first experienced some form of partner violence between 11 and 17 years of age.
Only 33% of teens who are in an abusive relationship will ever tell anyone about the abuse and 81% of parents believe teen dating violence is not an issue.
It is essential to raise community awareness so that parents, teachers, counselors and teens themselves know the signs.
The Jersey Battered Women’s Services (JBWS) hotline phone number is 1-877-R-U-ABUSED or (973) 267-4763.
